Summer is here, and with the days getting longer many are looking forward to spending time outside and giving their outdoor space a new look for the season. When taking on summer home and garden projects, the cost of supplies can act as a deterrent to taking on new projects. So, how can families get their backyards summer-ready without breaking the bank?

DIY and design experts Ben and Erin Napier are available for live remote interviews from their home and own backyard in Laurel, Mississippi to provide tips and ideas to create a comfortable and functional outdoor living space this summer that’s great for entertaining, gardening and relaxing.

While big backyard projects can be intimidating and cost-prohibitive, Ben and Erin will also discuss ways to create a beautiful outdoor space that doesn’t break the bank, including how a flexible cash rewards credit card can help make a project budget go further.

Their tips include:

Tips to Create Your Best Backyard

  • Dress up your backyard for summer nights with string lights:  you can find string lights at the grocery store or many wholesale clubs, and they provide inexpensive, weather-resistant décor.

  • Stretch your budget by planting perennial flowers that will come back each year, which can save you time and money.
  • To help prevent bug bites in your yard, place citronella plants around your outdoor entertaining area. It’s the best natural deterrent to keep mosquitoes away.

  • Music is key to a great gathering. If you don’t have a wireless speaker, place your phone into a big plastic cup or bowl, with the speaker end down, and it will amplify the sound like a large speaker system. It also helps to create a playlist ahead of time so good music is ready when you are!

  • To freshen up your yard for summer entertaining, pressure wash your house and fence once a year, ideally after pollen season. This can help make exterior surfaces look like they were just repainted. If you’re planning to repaint your porch floor, use an oil-based enamel.  The finish offers the benefits of a rich look for summer porch parties and won’t chip as fast.
