HOW DAIRY-FREE PRODUCTS CAN BE FAR MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND KIND TO ANIMALS

PETA Helps with Consumer Tips on the Benefits of Vegan, Plant-Based Milk Foods

Alicia Aguayo

Senior Manager of PETA Latino

Dairy consumption has been declining for years with about half of Americans regularly consuming vegan milks and other plant-based products. As the surge in demand for nut- and oat-based milks and the popularity of vegan food rise, people are also tuning in to the messages of animal rights, human health and animal agriculture’s negative impact on the environment. However, common dairy farm practices that hurt animals is rarely talked about. Cows used by the industry suffer inhumane treatment including the forced separation of newborn babies from their mothers, which is traumatic for the cow and her calf.

DID YOU KNOW:

  • About 65% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant, and cow’s milk is the leading allergen among children 12 and under.
  • Dairy cows do not spontaneously produce milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk to nourish their own young. Cows on dairy farms are kept almost constantly pregnant in order to keep them producing as much milk as possible.
  • The idea of a “dairy cow” is a misconception. Cows kept on dairy farms are all simply mother cows made to produce milk at an unnatural pace.

On Tuesday, November 10, Senior Manager of PETA Latino and mom of two will be available to discuss the benefits of non-dairy milks including the humane treatment of animals, health and environmental benefits. She can also share what PETA is doing to educate consumers and how listeners can get involved.
