FACEBOOK OVERHAULS YOUR NEWS FEED, PRIORITIZING CONTENT TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY

LEARN WHY THIS CHANGE CAME ABOUT AND WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Lindsey Shepard

Director, Product Marketing

Facebook was built on the idea of connecting people with their friends and family, and that is still the driving principle of News Feed today. That’s why they have always put friends and family first in News Feed. But recently, people have given feedback that public content — posts from businesses, brands and celebrities — is crowding out the personal stuff that matters most to them. Additionally, academic research shows that when we use social media to connect with the people we care about, it can be good for our well-being. On the other hand, passively reading posts, articles or watching videos — while entertaining and informative — may not be as good.

This month, Facebook has made a significant update where they’re going to focus more on making sure Facebook helps people connect in ways that bring them togetherThey’ll predict which posts you will want to interact with your friends about, and give these posts more weight in ranking. These are posts that inspire comments and posts that you might want to share and react to. They also will be prioritizing posts from friends over posts from Pages.

In this satellite interview, Facebook’s Lindsey Shepard will discuss why Facebook is making this change to their News Feed and what that will look like. She will also discuss how they received people’s feedback that Facebook has become less about friends and more about posts from Pages into account in creating a better experience that helps promote meaningful interactions.
