The average American will spend $700 on holiday gifts and goodies this year, totaling more than $465 billion, the National Retail Federation estimates. 23% of that is spent on jewelry and diamonds.  Diamonds represent perhaps the most emotional, most meaningful and significant purchase one can make, so it is crucial to do your homework and make sure you know exactly what you are buying. However, with so much misinformation to be found online, it is essential to make sure your research is done with a credible source and to work with educated, qualified retailers who have proper certifications. After all, you wouldn’t buy a home without getting a proper inspection!

DIAMOND BUYING TIPS:

  • Do your homework. Whether you are buying a gift for her or for him or even something for yourself (self purchase is becoming increasingly more common), have some idea of what you are seeking prior to shopping. If it’s going to be a surprise, quietly ask friends, family, colleagues, etc. about what your recipient might like. Look at his/her current jewelry to see what would best suit his/her style. Take cues from her/his wardrobe the will guide you towards a piece of jewelry perfect for the recipient’s style.
  • Find a retailer (or e-tailer) who you can trust. Consider the selection, quality, and price range of the store’s merchandise, along with its reputation, team, and service. Give them an idea of what you want and let them guide you in the right direction.
  • If you are wondering how to buy a diamond, you really you start with the four Cs. It is the four Cs determine the value of the diamond that you’re purchasing. Understanding how diamonds are cut and graded will make you a more informed consumer and improve your buying experience.
  • Be sure to get a grading report for your diamond from a legitimate organization to be sure you’re buying a quality diamond. Not all grading reports are equal.
  • It’s important to know the origin of your diamond.
