NEW TOOLS TO HELP DISABLED AMERICANS THRIVE IN THE WORKPLACE

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH

NO BARRIERS SUMMIT IN NEW YORK CITY OCTOBER 4-6

David Shurna

No Barriers USA executive director – Fort Collins, CO

Kathy Martinez

Wells Fargo Disability & Accessibility Strategy manager and former assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor – San Francisco

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is more than twice the national average. With historically low unemployment rates among the general population, people with disabilities have more opportunities than ever to join the workforce. Historically, people with disabilities have had to navigate a world that is not built for them. However, their life hacks have changed the world—inspiring everything from developing touch screens to shaping the way we think about the universe and ourselves. When people with disabilities have a real seat at the table, the innovations they introduce are beneficial to everyone – inside and outside of the workplace.

In this satellite interview, Executive Director of No Barriers Dave Shurna will discuss No Barriers USA, a nonprofit organization that helps people unleash their potential through transformative experiences, tools, and inspiration, and the organization’s annual event called the No Barriers Summit. This year’s Summit will be held in New York City Oct. 5-6 and will gather 1,500 leaders, change-makers, and aspiring visionaries of all backgrounds who will focus on building diverse and inclusive workplaces where everyone can succeed.
