LARGEST PUBLIC HUMAN GENOME DATABASE

LAUNCH OF THE LARGEST PUBLIC HUMAN GENOME DATABASE TO TRANSFORM MEDICAL RESEARCH

Program Provides Rocket Fuel to Vice President Biden’s Moonshot Effort
to Fast Track Cure for Cancer.

In an effort to speed up the potential discovery of new treatments and cures of cancer and other diseases, Ambry Genetics launched AmbryShare, the world’s largest disease-specific public database of human genome data. The action is a first step to support global medical research and break the mold of data hoarding being done in academic and commercial organizations.

The company has initially released 10,000 human genomes focused on breast and ovarian cancer free to the research community.  With these data, Ambry Genetics has already identified 10-fold more genes implicated in these cancers than previously known to the public. The company plans to continue growing this free database by contributing data from thousands of genomes every month from its consented and de-identified patient samples, potentially contributing data from almost 200,000 genomes annually.

The release of these data provides a potential game changer in the effort to understand hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and to improve care for individuals predisposed to these and other cancers.

The move supports President Barack Obama’s Cancer Moonshot Task Force – being led by Vice President Joe Biden – to advance medical progress and uncover new treatments and a cure for cancer.  The decision to launch AmbryShare is driven by Ambry Genetics’ founder and CEO, Charlie Dunlop, who is a stage four cancer survivor and believes the release of these data will begin to transform medical research.  Ambry Genetics is taking the lead by sharing aggregate allele-frequency data, which allow researchers to see the percentage of people with a specific gene mutation, while inviting other commercial and academic organizations to do the same.  Dunlop believes his decision can open a flood gate to more and better medicines and a healthier future for everyone.
